New LivePCs from moka5

We put together 4 new LivePCs based off the latest Fearless Browser.

  • PHP Web Developer If you are a web developer, this is the LivePC for you.
  • Secure Remote Access This is an approximation of the solution that many people have asked us for: a web browser + email client + VPN. There is no good GUI for configuring VPNs in linux though. We'll add one when we get to the scripting part of the UI toolkit work.
  • Secure Office Workstation This is derived from the LivePC above, but it has two great pieces of software in addition. Ekiga Softphone and Open Office 2.2.1.
  • Text Adventure Games Many fun old games including Zork I-III, Beyond Zork, Hitchhiker's and some others.

Please send us any feedbacks you have.

June 18 Distro of the Day: Fedora 7

Today's Distro of the Day is Fedora 7. Fedora is the free community version of Red Hat Linux. Fedora 7 is the latest and greatest of the Fedora Core series. It was just released June 1st and was published in the LivePC library by a community member by June 5th.

The codename for Fedora 7 is "Moonshine" and it features a new visual style called "Flying High". Indeed, many parts of the system like the default backgrounds and login screens include hot air balloons and other themed elements.

Fedora is a very complete distribution that has just about everything you would want or need in a Linux distro. This makes it a little large at over 1GB. Fedora is also arguably the most popular and well-known Linux distribution, so it is easy to find support for it.

Here is a one-minute video podcast showing off Fedora 7:

June 17 Distro of the Day: Games Knoppix

Today's Distro of the Day is Games Knoppix. Games Knoppix is a version of Knoppix that is preinstalled with a lot of games. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. There are literally hundreds of games preinstalled in this distribution for you to try out. The whole image weighs in at 2.7 GB, but luckily with the LivePC Engine it can just download the parts you need so you don't have to wait for the whole thing to finish downloading.

Many of the games are hit-or-miss, so don't expect everything you try to wow you (or even work correctly - it seems a few of the game installs are broken). However, there are some truly great games installed, like Crack Attack, freeciv, and Beneath a Steel Sky. There is also a nice collection of emulators, so you can play the games from your old Amiga, C64, Nintendo, or any of a number of other gaming consoles.

Here is a one-minute video podcast showing off Games Knoppix:

June 16 Distro of the Day: One Laptop Per Child

Today's Distro of the Day is One Laptop Per Child. The OLPC project is a nonprofit project out of the MIT Media Lab to distribute $100 laptops to children throughout the world. It is designed to be extremely low power and work in remote areas without power or network. The hope is that by supplying children with laptops, "children in emerging nations will be opened to both illimitable knowledge and to their own creative and problem-solving potential."

Using LivePC technology, you can try out the OLPC operating system for yourself. Just install the LivePC Engine and click to download the OLPC LivePC.

Here is a 90 second video podcast showing off OLPC:

June 15 Distro of the Day: Damn Small Linux 3.3

Today's Distro of the Day is Damn Small Linux 3.3. Damn Small Linux (DSL) was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device.

DSL has a nearly complete desktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen with the best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD. In the quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop, the DSL maintainers made many GUI administration tools which are fast yet still easy to use.

DSL includes: XMMS (MP3, CD Music, and MPEG), FTP client, Dillo web browser, Netrik web browser, FireFox, spreadsheet, Sylpheed email, spellcheck (US English), a word-processor (Ted), three editors (Beaver, Vim, and Nano [Pico clone]), graphics editing and viewing (Xpaint, and xzgv), Xpdf (PDF Viewer), emelFM (file manager), Naim (AIM, ICQ, IRC), VNCviwer, Rdesktop, SSH/SCP server and client, DHCP client, PPP, PPPoE (ADSL), a web server, calculator, generic and GhostScript printer support, NFS, Fluxbox and JWM window managers, games, system monitoring apps, a host of command line tools, USB support, and pcmcia support, some wireless support.

Here is a one minute video podcast showing off DSL 3.3:

June 14 Distro of the Day: NexentaOS

Today's Distro of the Day is NexentaOS Alpha 7. NexentaOS is a little bit different in that it is based on Sun's OpenSolaris kernel rather than the Linux kernel. The Solaris kernel is well-known to be very solid and sophisticated. NexentaOS includes many Debian/Ubuntu packages and is as easy to use as Ubuntu.

NexentaOS includes Apache, MySQL, Perl/Python/PHP, Firefox, Evolution, software update manager, Synaptic package manager, Gaim Instant Messenger, abiword, administration & development utilities, editors, graphics, GNOME, interpreters, libraries and many others. All of this is running on the state-of-the-art SunOS kernel. Visit the ScreenShots gallery to see them all in action.

Here is a one minute video podcast showing off NexentaOS:

June 13 Distro of the Day: Austrumi 1.5.0

Today's Distro of the Day is Austrumi Linux 1.5.0. Austrumi Linux is a multilingual distribution out of Latvia that is only 70MiB but is packed with many great applications, including Firefox, GIMP, Inkscape, Abiword, MPlayer, homebank, numerous games and much more. You should be able to download the entire LivePC in less than ten minutes on a broadband connection.

Take a look at the complete list of applications, then scratch your head about how exactly they fit all of that in such a small image! Remarkable!

There are still a few caveats, such as a few applications appear in Latvian rather than English, and the sound doesn't work within the virtual machine. I'm sure these issues will be fixed soon.

Here is a one minute video podcast showing off Austrumi:

June 11 Distro of the Day: Dreamlinux 2.2MM

Today's Distro of the Day is Dreamlinux 2.2MM. Dreamlinux is a Brazilian distribution based on Debian, Knoppix and Morphix. (Don't worry, along with Brazilian Portuguese, it supports English and a slew of other languages.) Dreamlinux uses the zippy XFCE window manager and has taken quite a few cues from Mac OS X, from the application panel at the bottom of the screen to the round button style.

Here's a one minute video podcast showing off Dreamlinux:
